3000 MW! Greece proposes to Germany and Austria to build 'green energy cable'

According to Xinhua News Agency on October 21, the Greek government recently proposed to Germany and Austria to build a cable from Greece through the Balkans to transmit green electricity provided by Greece to central Europe.
Greek Energy Minister Kostas Skrekas said on the 20th: "It is not an easy task, but southern Germany has a huge demand for green energy ... and Greece can provide it."

According to the German news agency DPA, the initial transmission capacity of the proposed line in Greece will reach 3,000 megawatts and will run through Albania and other countries in the Balkans.

Solar, wind and hydropower make up a high proportion of Greece's existing energy mix. The Greek government said that installed renewable energy capacity has almost doubled this year to 3,800 megawatts. The goal is that by 2030, renewable energy can meet 70% of the country's electricity needs.

Cross-border grid connections are high on the agenda of the Greek government. In 2021, Greece, Cyprus and Egypt agreed to support the construction of the Europe-Africa grid interconnection project, and plan to build a submarine cable with a length of about 1,400km. Greece is also participating in the Eurasian Interconnection Project, which plans to start from Israel, pass through Cyprus and Greece, and lay cables with a length of more than 1,500km to transmit electricity to the EU market. The Cyprus government recently approved the laying of cables from Cyprus to the Greek island of Crete, about 900km away.
