CANBERRA (April 19): Australia on Tuesday said a world-leading plan could help it become a "renewable energy superpower" by sending massive amounts of solar power to Singapore via undersea power cables.
After the 7th New-Australia Leadership Conference held in Canberra, the capital of Australia, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Australian Prime Minister Albanis held a joint press conference to summarize the results of the conference.
cut greenhouse gas emissions
The two countries signed a new green energy agreement. Albanese said the agreement showed both sides "common determination" to cut greenhouse gas emissions through ambitious energy plans.
He pointed to clean energy start-up Solar Cable, which wants to build a high-voltage cable that could transport massive amounts of solar energy from Australia's northern desert to Singapore.
"Solar Cable" previously said that if successful, it will be the world's first intercontinental power grid in this regard.
"If this plan is successful, and I believe it will, you will see the world's largest solar power plant," Albanis said. "When I say Australia can be the world's renewable energy superpower, 'Solar Cable' Prospects are only part of what I'm talking about."
Lee Hsien Loong said the green economy agreement was "the first of its kind" and "we hope it will be a trailblazer for other countries to deal with global issues as long as they cooperate with each other."
Australia, one of the world's largest exporters of coal and natural gas, is often criticized on the global stage for failing to effectively reduce carbon emissions, and coal still plays a major role in domestic electricity production.
